Cobalt and Vitamin B12 Supplementation of Young Sheep

چکیده
The efficacy of 4 treatments in maintaining adequate plasma and liver vitamin B lz (B,,) concentrations was compared in young sheep grazing a cobalt (Co)-deficient site in the south east of South Australia. The treatments were injections of Blz or an intraruminal glass pellet containing Co prior to weaning and at weaning intraruminal glass pellets or Co pellets. A liveweight and fleece weight response was obtained to treatment. The intraruminal pellets maintained normal B,, status of sheep grazing Co-deficient pasture for about 1 year.

Effects of Vitamin B12 in Neonates and Young Infants
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is an essential coenzyme for nucleic acid synthesis. Animal protein is the major dietary source of vitamin B12. Deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to megaloblastic anemia, degeneration of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and abnormalities of epithelial tissues. Two factors are necessary for the cure of megaloblastic anemia: one in food (extrinsic factor) and one i...

1. Sheep fed on a maintenance ration of wheaten-hay chaff or of wheaten-hay chaff-lucerne-hay chaff (I : I, W/W) became deficient or incipiently deficient in vitamin E. 2. Degenerative changes were observed in bone marrow and muscle, and liver function was imparied in some animals. These abnormalities were not influenced by the vitamin B12 status of the animals or by a shortage of cobalt in the...
متن کاملEnhanced Vitamin B12 Production using Chlorella vulgaris
Microalgae Chlorella Vulgaris is enriched in vitamin B12 and cobalt ion which is positioned in the center of the vitamin molecule. This study aimed to investigate how different concentrations of cobalt chloride salt affected the vitamin B12 production by utilizing CO2 gas, to assess C. vulgaris biomass. Therefore, Bold’s basal medium used as the medium and 0.5, 1....
متن کاملFood-Like Growth Conditions Support Production of Active Vitamin B12 by Propionibacterium freudenreichii 2067 without DMBI, the Lower Ligand Base, or Cobalt Supplementation
Propionibacterium freudenreichii is a traditional dairy bacterium and a producer of short chain fatty acids (propionic and acetic acids) as well as vitamin B12. In food applications, it is a promising organism for in situ fortification with B12 vitamin since it is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) and it is able to synthesize biologically active form of the vitamin. In the present study, vita...

An experiment was conducted to measure the effects of cobalt supplementation of pregnant heifers grazing pangola grass pastures on lactation and calf growth. Seven pregnant Hereford heifers were used, with three of these receiving a cobalt bullet and grinder four months after insemination. Cobalt supplementation of heifers had no effect on subsequent milk production or composition. However, cal...
